(The C didnt want to join the little acronym party, because its still hanging around campus. Itll probably never detach itself from the Pure aWesomeness that is MITAs I would do right now if I had the chance to high school seems rather, um, boring in comparison [understatement alert]) Before I write about my experience at CPW, I have a disclaimer to make: There is only one picture on this post. I usually only read blogs if they have pictures on them. This tendency results from my inability to focus on large chunks of text unless said chunks of text are arranged into some sort of visually appealing shape, like a circle or better yet, a hexagon (do you know what I mean? Appealing text chunks should be called textagons!!). So anyways, I kind-of sort-of dropped my camera down the stairwell at New House 3 on Saturday. The good news is that this mishap didnt affect the camera at all it still works perfectly, and no pictures were erased. So what could possibly be the bad news? Well, the bad news is that throughout the entire weekend at CPW, I took all of, like, fifteen pictures. Yup, kind of pathetic; cue the well-founded exclamations of WHAT?!??!!? and wow, just wow I guess I was more focused on being there in the present than viewing MIT from behind a lens (thats my excuse). Basically I wanted to get the most fun out of my stay per unit time. Hey, from what Ive heard, theres always orientation, right? Because of my inability to take pictures, this post will only have one picture, selected from the 14 possible ones I could have picked (one was blurry): As a substitute for all of the other million pictures I could have taken, Ill use this one picture to describe the majority of my CPW experience. The slightly frazzled hair and right hand reluctant to make contact with the balls represents how much I was overwhelmed by the sheer amount of stuff going on Because CPW was full of wonderful things, from liquid nitrogen ice cream (thanks Random Hall!) to UROP tours (GAMBIT RAWKS) to free bubble tea (thanks ATS!) to tie-dyeing (thanks McCormick!) to delicious brunch (thanks Next House!) to a spiffy hack at the Media Lab (way too cool!) to the Meet the Bloggers event (Hello Yan!!! I ended up not dyeing my hair) to many more events that I wish I had attended. There was simply not enough time, just as there was simply not enough time to say hello to each of the colored balls in Simmons (ex-)meditation room (I found this pretty silver one, and kind of wanted to keep it as a pet). Sure, I dont think CPW was an accurate representation of life at MIT, just the same way that the one picture of me marinating in colored balls wasnt an accurate representation of my CPW (I only went in there once, I swear). Its just one picture, just one snapshot. CPW gave me a snapshot (and taste! read: FREE FOOD) of the culture at MIT, in all its unfettered glory (after all, I didnt see any of those infamous psets the entire time). During CPW, I met amazing, accomplished, and talented people from all around the country and the world. I made new friends. I tried new things. I had more fun than I thought was possible in four days. And throughout it all I came to realize that, hey, I really like MIT, I feel like I belong. The people here are not intimidating. They are easy to approach and know how to have a good time. Its worth it. I finally realized that getting into MIT was for real, and not an accident. I didnt want to leave. Also during CPW I realized that when I come to MIT this fall I need to bring a pair of heavy duty galoshes. Having rain-soaked sponges for shoes is not very comfortable. As Greenberg (1989) pointed out, however, equity research offers little guidance as to when psychological adjustments rather than objective adjustments will occur. Complicating the matter further, psychological adjustments are difficult to measure and validate. Equity theory predictions about reactions to inequity have been tested primarily in laboratory experiments. The typical experiment involves (a) subjects performing a task, (b) distribution of a monetary reward and performance feedback, and (c) measurement of performance on a subsequent iteration of the task. Situations of inequity are set up through the manipulation of rewards and performance feedback, and individual responses to these inequitable situations are measured. As reviews of equity research have pointed out (Goodman & Friedman, 1971; Greenberg, 1982, 1987; Walster et al., 1978), these laboratory studies have shown that equity perceptions can significantly alter individuals performances. Music goes on forever." --Bob Marley, August 1979 We remember the brilliant and evocative music Bob Marley gave the world; music that stretches back over nearly two decades and still remains timeless and universal. Marley has been called "the first Third World superstar," "Rasta Prophet," "visionary," and" "revolutionary artist." These accolades were not mere hyperbole. Marley was one of the most charismatic and challenging performers of our time. Bob Marley's career stretched back over twenty years. During that time Marley's growing style encompassed every aspect in the rise of Jamaican music, from ska to contemporary reggae. That growth was well reflected in the maturity of the Wailers' music. Bob's first recording attempts came at the beginning of the Sixties. His first two tunes, cut as a solo artist, meant nothing in commercial terms and it wasn't until 1964, as a founding member of a group called the Wailing Wailers, that Bob first hit the Jamaican charts. The record was "Simmer Down," and over the next few years the Wailing Wailers -- Bob, Peter Mclntosh and Bunny Livingston, the nucleus of the group -- put out some 30 sides that properly established them as one of the hottest groups in Jamaica. Mclntosh later shortened his surname to Tosh while Livingston is now called Bunny Wailer. Despite their popularity, the economics of keeping the group together proved too much and the two other members, Junior Braithwaite and Beverley Kelso, left the group. The mother in this story has lived a hard, long life, doing the job of a man, never complaining, just doing the things to survive. Then we have her daughter, Dee, who I picture as never having broken a sweat in her life. As a child she hated her house, her living, her culture. When the fire had burnt down the old house, she just sat there in amazement under an old gum tree, as if she wanted to dance in the ashes. She did all this while her mother was carrying Maggie, with arms burnt so bad they were sticking to her, and whose hair was singed and smoking with the foul stench of burning flesh. Why then, if her heritage means so much to her, didn’t she lift a finger to save any of the house or items in it? Instead she sat under a tree admiring the disaster that was taking place. Like the house, her family was of little importance to her. She was ashamed of their lack of knowledge and seemed very much bothered by the poverty in which she lived. In her mind, to be important was to be worldly. To have riches and â€Å"style† were what mattered, not her family. It’s ironic how when she was younger she could not wait to get out of her lifestyle, but now she claims her culture is important to her. She even goes through the extent of changing her name since in her mind, â€Å"Dee† was the name given to her by her oppressors when in reality it was the name passed down by her own family. Dee changes her name to Wangero Lewaninka Kemanjo, which supposedly goes back to her African roots. The mother passively accepts the change with no argument. She doesn’t even say a word when Dee takes the churn top off the butter churner that has milk in it that has already clabbered, and claims it as her own. Dee doesn’t even stop to think that it’s still in use, just that she wants it and that’s that. The mother’s slowly being nudged and pushed; like the cow she doesn’t mind! Then Dee demands that she be able to take the two quilts that were made by her grandma. When the mother claims that the quilts were promised to her sister Maggie, Dee gets furious, stating that Maggie can’t appreciate them. She’ll ruin them by using them everyday. Dee is trying to gain a culture that she believes comes from objects like the churner and the quilts. But her idea of culture is something to be hung on a wall, put on display. She has no idea that culture comes from knowing and living the culture. To them it is a way of life; to Dee, it is the â€Å"in† thing to do. I feel that the mother finally sees this in Dee and doesn’t respect it. So for the first time in the mother’s life, the cow was milked the wrong way and had begun to kick. She snatches the quilts out of Dee’s hands and throws them into the arms of Maggie. Furiously stomping out of the house, Dee shouts, â€Å"You don’t understand!† â€Å"What?† exclaims her mother. â€Å"Your heritage,† Dee responds. The final words Dee says are, â€Å"It’s really a new day for us. But from the way you and mama still act, you’d never know it.† How is it that she doesn’t even realize a simple statement? She never has and she never will have this culture. Culture is not all art, it’s not something you turn on and off: it’s life.
